apf-tom1Tom Matthews – Program Director
Learning from his father, who was a passionate teacher and youth worker, Tom discovered the rewards of helping others through teaching and learning. After completing a Mathematics degree at the University of Bath, UK, he based himself in the south west of England and surfed the cold waters of Cornwall while completing his teacher training. He worked in Special Education for two years in Cornwall and developed a genuine appreciation of the emotional factors associated with learning and the importance of raising the self esteem of young people.

Surfing and travelling are high on Tom’s agenda and this had led him to many adventures around the globe. In 2006, the pull of warmer climes brought him to the international circuit and to Canggu in Bali. He worked as a teacher in Canggu Community School for eight years and brought learning alive to many students, inspiring young people through his passion for teaching.

Tom has been an integral part of the Collaboration Centre and continues making a positive contribution with his enthusiasm, energy and passion for teaching.

apf-karen1Karen Ball – Program Director

Karen’s love of the water began from an early age through practising and competing in synchronised swimming at her local swimming club in the UK. She discovered surfing and a love for the ocean when she joined the surf club at the University of Bath where she studied languages. Her determination and strength of mind ensured her surfing continued year round come sunshine or snow!

As part of her degree course, Karen spent a year abroad on Reunion Island teaching English. It was this year that sparked her interest in teaching, and a passion for travel and learning from different cultures. She continued to travel and eventually found herself in Indonesia, where she fell in love with the warmth and openness of the Indonesian people.

Karen spent eight years teaching English at Canggu Community School in Bali, where she developed an EAL policy for the school and formed close bonds with her students who ranged from primary school age to adults. Karen loves the constant challenges that teaching can bring and the scope for creativity and inspiring students, which she finds makes a rewarding experience working at the Collaboration Centre.
