Passing the Torch in the Mentawai: Supporting the Return of Our Ocean School
Empowering the remote communities of West Sumatra through English literacy, ocean safety, and sustainable eco-tourism skills.

Education. Ocean Safety. Local Opportunity.
A full circle journey for education and empowerment in the Mentawai Islands
A Perfect Foundation is proud to support Our Ocean School as they continue the work of building local capacity, creating opportunity, and helping young people thrive in a region shaped by the ocean.
Our Story: The Full Circle Journey
What We Started: 2015–2020
Over a decade ago, A Perfect Foundation established the first Education and Conservation Centre in the remote Mentawai Islands with a vision to build community capacity, reduce plastic waste, and provide sustainable education.
We were deeply embedded in the region until the unprecedented arrival of COVID-19 forced a halt to international logistics, travel, and our classroom operations. With heavy hearts, we had to farewell our Project Coordinators and close what we started, but the seeds of education had already been sown.

The Rebirth
Our Ocean School
Today, we are thrilled to throw our support behind Our Ocean School, a brilliant Australian-registered, female-led non-profit that is picking up exactly where we left off.
Headquartered locally in Tuapejat, North Sipora, they are giving the youth of the Mentawai Islands an invaluable sanctuary for learning and local empowerment.
Project Focus
“The seeds of education had already been sown.”
Our Ocean School represents a powerful continuation of community trust, education and grassroots impact in the Mentawai.

The Connection: Welcoming Back Rani
This initiative isn’t just a spiritual successor. It is a direct continuation of our community family.
Rani, an incredible local teacher who worked side-by-side with us during our foundation’s early years, is one of the co-founders and was until recently one of the lead educators for Our Ocean School.
Having Rani involved means that the values of trust, cultural respect, and grassroots community dedication we established a decade ago remain firmly rooted at the heart of the school's mission.

Practical Skills for a Sustainable Future
Our Ocean School's tailored programs are designed to uplift communities and ensure local youth directly benefit from the region's rapidly growing surf tourism industry. Their core curriculum goes beyond the traditional classroom to focus on practical, life-saving, and income-generating skills.
English Literacy
English language literacy programs prepare young locals for employment opportunities in the expanding local hospitality and eco-tourism sectors.
Ocean Safety & Lifesaving
Essential swimming, water rescue, and first aid training crucial for a thriving life lived by the sea.
Eco-Guardianship
Reintroducing core elements of plastic waste reduction and marine sustainability to protect the fragile Mentawai ecosystems.
