Protecting a nation made of 99% ocean
The Maldives is a vast, vulnerable ecosystem made up of 99% ocean and only 1% land, meaning plastic pollution here is not just an eyesore. It is an existential crisis.
A Formal Environmental Partnership for the Maldives
While our environmental journey began in Indonesia, where we pioneered and successfully implemented a dedicated recycling hub in the Mentawai Islands, our expansion into the Maldives required a unique, targeted approach.
To achieve this, A Perfect Foundation and The Perfect Wave established a formal environmental partnership exclusively for our Maldives operations, joining forces with Parley for the Oceans, Parley Maldives, in 2019.
By combining the global network of Parley with the dedicated travel base and local presence of The Perfect Wave, we are actively working to turn remote Maldivian surf regions into blueprints for plastic-free, sustainable tourism.
How It Works
From surf charters to plastic interception
When you book a surf charter with The Perfect Wave, you get to partake in beach and remote island cleanups, collecting discarded plastic bottles and marine debris.
This waste is returned to the Parley Collection Depot in Male for cleaning, sorting and packing into jumbo bales before being shipped globally to be upcycled into premium materials like Parley Ocean Plastic, turning ocean pollution into sustainable apparel, footwear and accessories.

We run active programs to intercept plastic waste before it enters the ocean or ends up in destructive open landfills, clearing coastlines, beaches, and surf breaks.

Through community-level education programs inspired by the Parley Ocean School initiatives, we help foster the next generation of Ocean Guardians among local youth and visiting travellers alike.
Supporting the First Future Island Nation
The Republic of the Maldives is officially recognised as Parley’s first Future Island Nation, a global proof-of-concept launching pad demonstrating how small island developing states can lead the fight to end marine plastic pollution.
As a travel company, we recognise our industry’s responsibility. Tourism is the largest industry in the Maldives, but with over one million global arrivals annually, visiting travellers and the services provided to them represent the highest generators of waste per capita.

Through this alliance, we leverage our commercial reach in the Maldives, including our primary surf operations at partner locations like Kandooma Resort, to directly drive Parley’s nationwide conservation goals.
Closing the Loop: Music in Paradise × Parley
Our commitment to Parley extends beyond our surf operations and deep into our boutique event experiences. Funds raised through our Music in Paradise Maldives events directly back Parley’s mission through a tangible, closed-loop initiative.
In the past, MIP funds have been used to purchase Parley’s co-branded reusable water bottles, which are entirely engineered from intercepted, recycled plastic bottles.
We distribute these high-performance eco-bottles to all our event attendees, performing artists, and touring parties on arrival, instantly eliminating the need for thousands of single-use plastic bottles throughout our event week.
Driving Collective Impact
Through this alliance, we leverage our commercial reach in the Maldives, including our primary surf operations at partner locations like Kandooma Resort, to directly drive Parley’s nationwide conservation goals.
