About the Coral Restoration Program
As an island nation on the frontline of climate change, the Maldives relies heavily on the health of its coral reefs. Recognizing this, Kandooma partnered with MARS Sustainable Solutions and Save the Beach Maldives to revitalize the resort’s house reef.
In 2022, the team was trained to use MARS Reef Star technology, a scalable and cost-effective method for reef scaping and coral restoration.
Today, the work continues through coral planting experiences, reef monitoring, frame procurement and long-term restoration efforts across the Kandooma house reef.
Kandooma’s Commitment
Eco-conscious hospitality with practical environmental action
Kandooma is a leader in eco-conscious hospitality, with the resort’s operations designed to minimize footprint while maximizing impact.
A large-scale solar installation reduces carbon emissions by approximately 215 tonnes annually. Through a partnership with Secure Bag Maldives, materials are repurposed and upcycled, turning discarded resources into valuable new products.
On-site glass bottling and filtered water systems also significantly reduce single-use plastic across the resort.

Restoration Progress
Since the initial pilot, the team has continued to build a scalable restoration program at Kandooma, with expanded operations beginning in November 2025 to support long-term reef recovery.

Visit the Perfect Wave Surf Shop to book your coral planting experience. You will join the team on a short boat trip to the restoration site, where you will learn to graft live coral snippets onto the frames and help secure them to the reef.
This is a direct, memorable way to contribute to the reef’s recovery during your time in the Maldives.
