Why Rivers?
Stopping plastic before it reaches the ocean
Every year, millions of tons of plastic enter our oceans, devastating marine life, choking coral reefs, and degrading coastal environments.
Science tells us that 80% to 90% of ocean plastic is carried there by rivers and streams. Sungai Watch’s philosophy is simple: if you stop the leak in the rivers, you save the ocean.
From Grassroots Bali Initiative to Global Model
Originally founded in Bali by siblings Gary, Kelly, and Sam Bencheghib, Sungai Watch has grown from a grassroots initiative into a world-class, data-driven environmental force.
They are currently proving their highly scalable model across Indonesia, home to the world's most densely populated island, Java, and some of the world's most compromised waterways, with an ultimate vision to deploy these river defence systems globally.

Sungai Watch designs, builds, and deploys localised, low-cost floating trash barriers engineered to adapt to different river currents, widths, and seasonal shifts while allowing marine life and natural water flows to pass beneath them.

Full-Time River Warriors
A barrier is only as good as the team maintaining it. Sungai Watch’s Village Model creates local green careers, with full-time River Warriors clearing barriers daily and preventing plastic from escaping downstream during heavy rain cycles.

Data Intelligence & Brand Audits
Every kilogram of trash pulled from a barrier is transported to a regional sorting hub and categorised into over 30 material types. This data powers Brand Audits that identify the corporations producing the most common single-use plastics.

Emergency Cleanups & Dumpsite Mapping
Beyond the water, the team maps illegal landfills and open dump sites along riverbanks, conducting rapid-response emergency cleanups before seasonal monsoons sweep loose trash into waterways.

Closing the Loop: Upcycled Design
Through Sungai Design, discarded plastic bags are transformed using heat-pressing technology into durable, premium furniture, closing the loop on waste and helping fund future river operations.
